Forecast discussion: I hope all their moms enjoyed the brilliant sunshine and the 80 degree high temperature Boston received on Sunday. It is a little tough to put into a neat little package. However, you may want to bottle this weather for a future time. The weather pattern will become a little unsettled through the rest of the week.

High temperature forecast for May 12, 2014

Right now, a high pressure system over the Mid-Atlantic is controlling the weather. This high will slowly move to the south, as we await a cold front moving south from Quebec, Canada. We will still see temperatures near 80 degrees for high temperatures on Monday, but the front will quickly change that by Monday night. This “back door” cold front will not change our temperatures too much late Monday night, but the change will be felt on Tuesday. Temperatures will drop over 20 degrees as the high temperature on Tuesday barely reaches 60 degrees. Also, the front will help create a few showers early Wednesday morning.

As we move into Wednesday evening, a strong cold front forming in the north central U.S. will begin to trek towards the east. This front will help create scattered showers for Thursday. According to the American model, a low pressure center will form over the Delmarva Peninsula Thursday night, and move into the Mid-Atlantic for Friday. This low will help bring moisture from the Atlantic, and the front will extend south into the Gulf of Mexico. Getting two significant bodies of water to feed the low, we will have the opportunity to see heavy rain and scattered thunderstorms into Saturday morning.

The low will slowly be pushed out to sea, and precipitation will taper off to showers by Saturday afternoon. Eventually, the rainfall will end by early Saturday evening. A weak ridge of high pressure will give us limited sunshine for next Sunday, with the chance for more showers by the evening. Temperatures will rebound after Tuesday’s below seasonable conditions. But, temperatures will fall to the lower 60’s for high temperatures by next Sunday.
