Boston weather: Clouds arrive and cooler

Forecast discussion: Thanks to a high pressure system now offshore of North Carolina, it brought the perfect weekend to Boston. There was a little more cloud cover in the skies than Saturday, but that did not stop our high temperature from reaching 80 degrees this afternoon. However, this week will look and feel very different, as an unsettled weather pattern begins to set up over the region.

The cloud cover will be due to two different weather systems. The first is a weak cold front passing the Great Lakes. The second is a low pressure system centered over Ohio. The two systems will remain almost stationary around the east coast for a couple of days. The high should stop any showers from arriving until Monday evening. But, we will see some scattered showers and thunderstorms for all of Tuesday.

The computer models are coming to a better agreement on the rest of the week. By Wednesday, some moisture will move offshore, allowing for some partial sunshine for Wednesday. However, a much stronger low pressure system moving east in Canada will bring a long cold front towards the east coast, starting on Thursday. The actual front will not pass through New England until Friday night. There might be a brief period of dry weather Thursday night, before we see more precipitation for all of Friday.

As we move into next weekend, the cold front will finally move off into the Atlantic by Saturday morning. We should see some sunshine before the day is out, and temperatures will climb back into the middle to upper 70’s. We will return to mostly sunny skies next Sunday, with temperatures reaching the lower to middle 70’s.
