Forecast discussion: Monday started with mostly cloudy skies in Boston, before the skies cleared up by the afternoon. There were still some moderate rip currents along our beaches, thanks to the heavy swells created by Hurricane Arthur over the weekend. Also, the humidity was quite low. But, the strong southwest winds helped to bring our high for the day up to 87. We will continue to see hot, humid conditions into the middle of the week in eastern Massachusetts.
Also, we will begin to see some on again, off again shower and thunderstorm activity. A cold front pushing through the Great Lakes will become stalled, allowing for any potential shower or thunderstorm activity to be created. The computer models show that there will be the potential for some strong thunderstorms, which may have strong wind gusts and small hail.
At this time, the best chance for the strong thunderstorms will be Wednesday. An upper level stream of air will be right over New England, and in the left front and right rear quadrants of this air will be the best chance for strong thunderstorms to be created. Eventually, the cold front will push through Southern New England early Thursday morning. A strong high pressure system will help bring drier and cooler air over Rhode Island to begin the weekend.
As we move into early next week, a slow moving cold front will help trigger some isolated showers and thunderstorms Sunday afternoon. The models show a wide low pressure system staying to our west on Monday, which will continue the possibility of wet weather into Tuesday.
