On Sunday, March 6, Dropkick Murphys will descend on the House of Blues in Cleveland with a barrage of Irish Punk.
Now in their 14th year, Boston’s beloved Dropkick Murphys have honed their enthusiastic live performances to a science. Composed of Al Barr (lead vocals), Ken Casey (lead vocals, bass), Matt Kelly (drums, bodhran, vocals), James Lynch (guitar, vocals), Tim Brennan (guitar, accordion, vocals), Jeff DaRosa (mondolin, banjo, bouzouki, whistle, acoustic guitar, keyboard, vocals) and Scruffy Wallace (bagpipes), these seven fellows have created their own musical niche. Although they are best known for their platinum single I’m Shipping Up to Boston, which was featured in the Oscar-winning feature film The Departed, their fans know that their music spans a wide genre, from the high tempo Irish pub anthems, like I’m Shipping Up to Boston and the new single Going Out in Style, to the powerful ballad Forever. They are currently touring in support of their storytelling concept album Going Out in Style, on their own label Born & Bred Records.
The highly under-appreciated alt punk band Against Me! is opening. Kicking around in the scene since 1997, Against Me! has been hailed by such sources as Spin and Rolling Stone as an outstanding punk band. Influences like The Clash can clearly be heard on songs like Stop!, which was featured in an MTV PSA for “Rock the Vote.” Tom Gabel (guitar, lead vocals), James Bowman (guitar, vocals), Andrew Seward (bass, vocals) and new drummer Jay Weinberg are currently touring the U.S. in support their most recent album, White Crosses, following successful 2010 tours with acts like Billy Talent and Silversun Pickups. You can see their latest video for I Was a Teenage Anarchist on Tom Gabel’s own YouTube channel.
