1. David Ortiz (2006) - 54
David Ortiz hit the most home runs in a season for the Boston Red Sox when he hit 54 in 2006. Ortiz led the American League in home runs that season.
For his career, David Ortiz has hit over 400 home runs, but because he tested positive for PEDs during his career, he is unlikely to ever make the Baseball Hall of Fame.
2. Jimmie Foxx (1928) - 50
Jimmie Foxx hit 50 home runs for the Red Sox during the 1928 season. That is the second most home runs any Boston Red Sox player has ever hit in a season.
For his career, Jimmie Foxx hit 534 home runs. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1951.
3. David Ortiz (2005) - 47
In addition to hitting the most home runs in a season by a Red Sox player, David Ortiz also hit the third most when had 47 in 2005.
4. Jim Rice (1978) - 46
Jim Rice hit 46 home runs during his MVP season in 1978. Rice also led the AL in hits (213), triples (15), RBIs (139), and SLG (.600).
A monster year, but because the New York Yankees won the one-game playoff in 1978, Ron Guidry (25-3 with a 1.74 ERA, and the win in the play-in game) should probably have been the MVP.
5. Manny Ramirez (1996) - 45
Manny Ramirez hit 45 home runs for the Boston Red Sox in 2005. Manny hit 555 career home runs, but, like David Ortiz, he tested positive for PEDs, and is unlikely to get into the Hall of Fame.

Mo Vaughn hit 45 home runs for the Red Sox during the 1996 season.
T-6. Carl Yastrzemski (1967) - 44
Carl Yastrzemski led the AL in home runs in 1967 when he hit 44 (tied with Harmon Killebrew). Yaz also led the league in hits (189), runs (112), RBIs (121), batting average (.326), OBP (.418), and SLG (.622).
Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown in 1967, and was the league MVP. His 44 home runs in 1967, when home runs were hard to come by, is arguably the best home run season by any Red Sox player.
