Jared Remy, the son of Boston Red Sox announcer Jerry Remy, has been arrested for the murder of his 27-year-old girlfriend, Jennifer Martel. According to an Aug. 16 report on ESPN, Remy had just been released from custody on his own recognizance the day before because of assault and battery charges. Martel was the victim in that incident, too, but there was no restraint order issued. This time, he is being held without bond.
When the police arrived at the scene of the stabbing death, they found Jared Remy covered in the victim’s blood. He had also allegedly threatened the neighbors who had tried to intervene in the attack when it moved from inside the house to outside on the patio.
Jared Remy had 15 criminal charges since 1998, some of them involving assaults against women. His attorney, who is just putting together the pieces of the case, mentioned that his client had what might be defensive wounds.
Jerry Remy, who had played second base for the Boston Red Sox before becoming their long-time announcer, will not be announcing the weekend games due to this tragedy. In his place will be Dennis Eckersley.
