Felix Perez, 23, and Dana Leyland, 29, were arrested and charged with possession of counterfeit notes and uttering or publishing false writings after they paid for their bar tab at a Boylston Street hotel bar.
Police were contacted by a bartender at the Charlesmark Hotel, 760 Boylston Street, on Monday at approximately 9:21 p.m. after two men ordered beers and cognac and paid for the drinks with what appeared to be a $100 bill and received changed. A third man also ordered a cognac and also paid for it with what the bartender thought was a $100 bill and received change. A witness said all three men were sitting together.
The bartender said he examined the bills more closely and noticed a “ghost image” of Abraham Lincoln, more commonly found on the $5 bill, and suspected the bills were counterfeit. He said he followed two of the men into the Sola bar in the Hotel Lenox at 710 Boylston Street while the third suspect continued on Boylston Street toward Fairfield Street and escaped.
When officers arrived, a witness informed them that he saw the suspects drop money on the floor behind them and officers collected eight counterfeit $100 bills.
