The Boston Celtics have many options in this year’s NBA Draft. With the sixth overall pick, the Celtics will have their share of talent to choose from in what is considered a very deep draft. Although one of those options could involve a trade for Kevin Love, if they keep the pick one player interested in coming to Boston is 20-year-old Croatian point-forward Dario Saric. According to Boston.com on Thursday, Saric listed the Celtics as a team he wants to pick him if he decides to enter the draft.
The Adriatic League MVP has also listed the Los Angeles Lakers as a team he would want to be selected by if he does decide to come out. Saric would be intriguing for the Celtics because he is a scorer and does have size. He has been compared to Dirk Nowitzki, but so has last year’s first round Kelly Olynyk. The type of size the Celtics need is someone who is able to play inside the circle and dominate the glass.
But still, the scoring potential and upside of Saric would be hard to pass up. Last season with Croatian team Cibona Zagreb he averaged 16.3 points and 9.5 rebounds. The rebound numbers could be enough to convince a team like the Celtics to take a chance, but it may also involve him changing his game a little to take more advantage of his size.
Dario Saric is praised for his shooting touch, court vision and toughness. The only reason he wasn’t higher up on some draft boards is the uncertainly surrounding whether he will leave Europe to play for an NBA team. As of right now, the Celtics and the Lakers are two teams on a short list who can probably convince Saric to come and play right away. The Celtics selecting Saric would also depend on what the team does with Jeff Green and of course whether they become winners in the Love sweepstakes.
