Boston Bruins could be pursing Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros

The trade deadline is a funny thing in sports.

As the date approaches teams are forced to evaluate their roster and decide, once and for all, how they want to continue the rest of the season. Some teams will decide this is not their year to compete for a title while other teams decide that they’re missing one or two pieces that could bring them home Lord Stanley’s cup.

The Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers are both in the thick of the playoff hunt and figure to be around come late-April and early-May when playoff hockey hits full gear. As they currently stand, the Bruins and Flyers boast solid teams but could also use some help.

The Flyers need to unload some salary and get value from an expiring contract on their blue line while the Bruins are searching for a replacement for injured defenseman Dennis Seidenberg, who tore his ACL and MCL in late December.
Interestingly enough, there is one player who fits the description for the Flyers and Bruins – Andrej Meszaros. The Flyers defenseman is a perfect candidate for the Flyers to move at the deadline while the Bruins need a player like Meszaros to fill in on their roster.

Meszaros, 28, carries a $4 million cap hit that expires at the end of the season when he will become an unrestricted free agent. The Slovakian-native has four goals and 12 assists in 35 games in 2013-14 despite spending most of the first half of the season as a healthy scratch.

TSN NHL insider Darren Dreger was on the NHL Network this week discussing the trade deadline when he said the Bruins may have interest in acquiring Meszaros from Philadelphia.

At the moment it is unclear what the asking price is for Meszaros but the general consensus is it can’t be too high. Meszaros has been the Flyers’ sixth defenseman all season and, as previously stated, was a healthy-scratch for much of the 2013 portion of the season in favor of Erik Gustafsson.

Between the expiring contract and logjam on the blue line, moving Meszaros for peanuts would benefit the Flyers so anything the Bruins could offer would be a bonus.

The trade deadline is at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, March 5th.
