Greenville, NC - On Friday, a federal jury found Anes Subasic, 35, guilty of multiple immigration violations, after prosecutors showed evidence that he had lied his extensive criminal record in his native Bosnia. He still faces trial for allegedly conspiring to wage “violent jihad” in the U.S.
In 2009, Subasic was indicted along with several others for planning a terrorist attack on the U.S. Marine base in Quantico, Va. as well as other targets.
According to the indictment, Subasic spent $995 attending a training program in Nevada that teaches how to perform assassinations; in 2007, ordered books on sniper training online and equipment used to convert a rifle into a sniper weapon and spoke in coded messages with the alleged ring leader of the group, Daniel Patrick Boyd ( a Muslim convert) about sending operative abroad to engage in “violent jihad.”
Jury selection began Monday in that trial. Subasic is charged with one count of conspiring to provide resources to terrorists and one count of conspiring to murder, kidnap and injure persons abroad.
Three of his alleged co-conspirators have already pleaded guilty to their roles in the terror plot.
Subasic emigrated to the U.S. in the 1990s when President Clinton allowed thousands of Bosnian Muslims into this country amid that nation’s internal strife.
Subasic failed to disclose his criminal past which included at least 10 prior criminal charges in his home country.
