In November 2010, I began to read one of my favorite books of all time "The Science of Being and Art of Living" by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
It took me almost a year to finish it just like a Course in Miracles, which took me another year to finish, 365 lessons, one every day.
The Science of Being is a very powerful book. Almost every page of it is marked as an important page. At one point I was so overwhelmed by his teachings, which I clearly understood, that I decided to learn more about his life.
That's when I found out that I was born on the same day that Maharishi and also on the same day of another respected spiritual leader, Swami Vivekananda.
As a spiritual journalist and on my birthday, I would like to communicate information about these masters and also to honor their existence for bringing insight, inspiration, and enlightenment to the world.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi introduced the Transcendental Meditation TM technique 40 years ago, a simple, natural and effortless technique which he called "technology of consciousness" for directly experiencing the field of Being and harnessing the unlimited treasures of infinite happiness, energy, creativity, intelligence, and organizing power bringing maximum success and fulfillment to daily life.
The National Institutes of Health NIH, has awarded more than $24 million to study the benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique for improving brain functioning and cardiovascular health during the past 20 years.
More than 600 scientific studies verifying the wide-ranging benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique have been conducted at 250 independent universities and medical schools in 33 countries during the past 40 years.
The TM program reduces stress and anxiety while increasing energy and vitality. Improves health, lowers high blood pressure, and promotes reversal of aging. It also increases memory, creativity and intelligence enriching and strengthening personal relationships to fully develop inner contentment, happiness and fulfillment, the state of enlightenment.
Swami Vivekananda, was the chief disciple of the 19th century mystic Ramakrishna Paramahansa.Vivekananda's inspiring personality was well known in India and in America during the last decade of the nineteenth century and the first decade of the twentieth.
He is considered a key figure in the introduction of Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the western world, mainly America and Europe.
His vast knowledge of Eastern and Western culture as well as his deep spiritual insight, fervid eloquence, brilliant conversation, broad human sympathy, colorful personality, and handsome figure made an irresistible appeal to the many types of Americans who came in contact with him. People who saw or heard Vivekananda even once still cherish his memory after a lapse of more than half a century.
He is perhaps best known for his inspiring speech which began "Sisters and Brothers of America," through which he introduced Hinduism at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893.
