Borderlands 2 is going to be getting a sequel, or a prequel, according to rumors that surfaced online Monday. Online retailer, GamePointsNow is claiming that 2K Australia is working on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. The odd name shouldn’t really surprise anyone who knows and loves this series but the fact that there will be a third game and that it might release by the end of this year could surprise some.
There has long been talk about the possibility of a third iteration of this title but 2K had claimed Borderlands 3 wasn’t coming this year. It is of course possible they were merely playing semantics since this game is slated to take place before the events of Borderlands 2.
The Pre-Sequel is said to take place on the moon of Pandora and will feature four new playable characters in Athena the Gladiator, Wilhelm the Enforcer, Nisha the Lawbringer and Fragtrap. While these characters are newly playable, three have appeared in previous Borderlands games. Athena made an appearance for the Borderlands DLC named The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. Wilhelm was a robotic boss in Borderlands 2 and it seems likely that Flagtrap is a kind of robot in the model of the uber-popular Claptrap.
GamesNow claims missions in this new game will revolve around completing missions for a younger Handsome Jack and will take you to Pandora’s moon of Elpis. Jetpacks will apparently allow you to travel around quickly thanks to the surface’s low gravity environment. Because this is a moon and not a terraformed planet, players will need to pick up “OX-kits” in order to keep the oxygen flowing.
This new report claims that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is releasing in 2014 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. There is no mention as to why this isn’t being produced for next generation consoles.
