After the success of Borderlands 2 and one of the most memorable villains of the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 era of gaming, how does 2K Games and Gearbox Software follow up? With a "pre-sequel" announcement Wednesday that nestles the latest version in between the first and second games in the series telling the story of how Handsome Jack came to be. But, it's not coming to the PS4 or Xbox One.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is headed to the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC in fall 2014 and launches players to Pandora's moon. That means not only low-gravity fights to add in with the crazy array of weaponry in the series but also dealing with new gameplay mechanics like oxygen management.
There's a new cast of characters as well with Handsome Jack playing a prominent role but well before he became the Machiavellian villain of Borderlands 2. In The Pre-Sequel, Jack is joined by some familiar faces in the Borderlands universe including Athena the Gladiator from DLC of the first game, Wilhelm the Enforcer who was a boss in the second and Nisha the Lawbringer who was a sheriff in the second title. Even Claptrap the Fragtrap is playable.
Together they will shoot and loot across the moon of Pandora to asist in the rise of the Hyperion Corporation and players will be able to witness Jack's transformation into a snarky tyrant.
Some of the new weaponry includes lasers and freeze ray weapons plus new moves thanks to the addition of jetpacks and new vehicles.
Development for Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is being handled by 2K Australia with Gearbox Software overseeing the project.
“Since Gearbox Software first created the Borderlands franchise, we never dreamed of this much love and support from gamers,” Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software said in a press release sent to Examiner. “We are grateful that the incredible talent at 2K Australia has been able to jump in with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to help it live up to the high standards that Borderlands fans have come to expect.”
