"Borderlands 2" fans who have been hoping for news on another installment in the series are bound for a bit of disappointment. In an interview surfacing Friday, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford said his company is not currently working on a "Borderlands 3" and isn't expecting to begin developing that title anytime soon.
There has been talk of a third installment in the Gearbox series for more than a year thanks in large part to the huge popularity of the second game in the series. Despite all that lip service there have never been any hard confirmations of "Borderlands 3" and now the game series' developers are quashing those rumors, if not once and for all then at least for this year.
Pitchford apparently understood just how disappointed the fans of the game would be with the news so he did throw a little red meat to the masses during the interview with Polygon. He said that the company isn't done with the series but right now there isn't an entirely new game on the horizon.
"We love Borderlands, and we know customers do too. So we will be doing more in Borderlands. But the thing that, when you think of what Borderlands 3 should be... No. We are not developing that right now. We don't know what that is yet. We can imagine what it must achieve, but we don't know what it is yet. I'm not going to f**k around with you like Valve does with Half-Life 3."
The irony of course being that claiming that you are going to delve into the universe that the fans love so much, without being more specific about how you do that without making a third installment is kind of messing around with people.
That quote does seem to indicate that there will indeed be a "Borderlands 3" out on the market at some point in the future but it likely won't be until late in 2015 at the earliest. In the meantime Borderlands fans can satiate their love of the series with the new version exclusively for the PS Vita that is hitting store shelves sometime this spring.
