Borderlands 2 to be released in mid to late 2012

If you haven't heard already, Gearbox Software, the creators of Borderlands, the first person shooter, which also includes character building elements like those found in role-playing games, announced in early August that there will be a sequel. The sequel is said to be released some time in the third quarter of 2012 for all major platforms.

Fans can expect the same co-op action they loved from the original, but Borderlands 2 is receiving a major upgrade.

Characters, Old and New

The game will feature four new playable characters. The first new character, Salvador, is nicknamed "Gunzerker", who is supposedly similar to Brick, from the first game in his abilities, but can dual wield any combinations of guns. The second character is a siren named Maya, similar to Lilith. Her abilities however, are unknown. The remaining two characters have not yet been revealed. But there is speculation that one may be a Bandit from a photo that was recently released. Claptrap, Guardian, and Angel return, as well as the four playable characters from the first game, Roland, Lilith, Brick, and Mordecai, as non playable characters.

Setting and Plot

Borderlands 2 takes place five years after the events of Borderlands. A man named Handsome Jack has taken credit for exposing the secrets of the Eridian Vault, which is what your character did at the end of Borderlands, has claimed the wealth and treasures from the vault and is now effectively in control of Pandora. The mysterious Guardian Angel from Borderlands returns, and reveals that Handsome Jack must be killed, with plenty of twists and turns along  the way.

New Concepts and Features

Recently, Gearbox has stated that they are taking fan criticisms to heart and they are working on making Borderlands 2 less repetitive than it's counterpart.  Gearbox promised to make player's experiences in Borderlands 2 consistently unique and more varied. In an interview with 2KTV, concept designer for the game, Scott Kester said:

"The guns this time around are so much better. They look different, they do different things. There’s a lot more gear that’s dropped.”

Along with tons of loot, there will be entirely new weapons. Gearbox is scrapping the hundreds of original ones from the previous installment, and starting fresh. Each gun-manufacturer will provide the character with weapons that reflect their unique styles, themes, and colors. Weapons will now also get their own custom enhancements and decals.

The team at Gearbox explain that they're making the game to be bigger and better than the original. Don't forget to check out the official teaser trailer to left and leave your comments and thoughts below!
