The game “Borderlands 2” has shipped 6 million copies since its release, making it one of publisher Take Two’s “most important long-term franchises,” writes Eddie Makuch for Gamespot on Feb. 5.
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed during a post-earnings financial call that the game had increased its sales since Oct. 2012, where it had sold a total of 5 million copies.
“Zelnick added that the Borderlands franchise is one of Take-Two's most important long-term properties, suggesting the company may be planning a series release for future platforms,” Makuch added.
“Borderlands 2,” which was launched in Sept. 2012, is a first-person shooter developed by Gearbox Software. The game was a critical success, receiving wide acclaim, and was released across the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC systems.
“Borderlands 2 was a key contributor to Take-Two's bottom line this quarter,” Makuch concludes, “helping the company post a profit of $78.8 million for the three-month period ended December 31, up 148 percent over last year. In addition, the game's digital expansions helped Take-Two digital revenue rise 244 percent year-over-year.”
