Bordeaux Wine Council announces selection for Today's Bordeaux 2014

The Bordeaux Wine Council recently announced the selection for Today's Bordeaux 2014, an annual program of 100 white, red, rosé and sweet wines priced between $10-$55. This year, Today's Bordeaux was selected by two panels of three judges each. The panels tasted through wines submitted from various Bordeaux appellations to determine the final selection. Judges included: Elin McCoy (Wine and Spirits Columnist for Bloomberg News, among other publications) May Matta-Aliah (Wine Educator, In The Grape) Christy Canterbury, MW, and Patrick Cappiello (Wine Director of Pearl & Ash Restaurant).

We recently sampled the following wines, which were included in the selection:

Château Capelle 2011

55% Sauvignon Blanc, 25% Muscadelle, 20% Sémillon

Notes: Coffee beans and Asian pear, medium body, green bean, grassy

We paired this up with fruit and enjoyed as an after-dinner wine.

Château La France Cuvée Gallus 2010

Bordeaux Supérieur

60% Merlot, 35% Malbec, 5% Cabernet Franc

Notes: Intense with rich and savory elements, powerful tannins

This bold red wine was a delicious complement to a grilled steak dinner.

Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite Réserve Spéciale 2012

82% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon

Notes: Medicinal, light, dark berry, fresh acidity

We enjoyed this deep red wine the most paired up with a sampling of cheeses.

The annual program, now in its ninth year, features well-priced Bordeaux wines available in the U.S. White, red, rosé, and sweet wines from 25 Bordeaux AOC’s are represented in this year’s selection. Bordeaux wine producers and their U.S. importers were invited to submit their wines for the selection earlier this year. All the wines in Today’s Bordeaux are sold in one or more of the following 19 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington D.C., and Washington State. Six wine experts were chosen to taste through the submitted wines and made the final selection for Today’s Bordeaux 2014.
