Because the safety of borax has come into question over the last few years, and because cooking and eating utensils are involved, this recipe for homemade dishwashing detergent does not include borax.
• 1 cup washing soda
• ¼ cup coarse salt (Pickling salt works very well. Do not use table salt.)
• ¼ cup citric acid
• 15-20 drops essential oil – citrus oils such as orange, grapefruit, tangerine and lemon are great for cleaning and have antibacterial properties as well.
Thoroughly mix together the dry ingredients using a whisk. Sprinkle 15-20 drops of essential oil over the mixture. Using the whisk, thoroughly mix again. Store in an air-tight container such as a mason jar.
Use 1 teaspoon of this mixture with each load. For loads with extra greasy or dirty dishes, 1 tablespoon may be used.
Don’t be tempted to use more. In this case, more is not better! If you begin to have issues with residual build-up on your dishes, use less.
Undiluted white distilled vinegar works very well as a rinse aid with this mixture.
