MLB agent Scott Boras told Examiner.com that he has yet to begin formal discussions with the Atlanta Braves regarding a possible contract extension for speedy center fielder Michael Bourn
The 29-year-old Bourn, a two-time Gold Glover and 2010 NL All-Star, was acquired by Atlanta from the Houston Astros on July 31.
He hit a combined .294 with two homers, 50 RBI and a major league-leading 61 stolen bases for the Astros and Braves last season.
It marked the third straight season in which Bourn led the big leagues in steals.
Although Bourn became an instant contributor in the leadoff role for skipper Fredi Gonzalez, the Braves ultimately finished one game behind the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card race.
Bourn, who hired Boras in December 2010, will enter his final season as an arbitration-eligible player before hitting the free-agent market.
At this point, Boras remains focused on negotiating contracts for his current free agents, such as Prince Fielder and Ryan Madson, before he addresses possible extensions for other clients.
However, Boras did refer to Bourn as the top center fielder in the game, saying his client should generate a strong market, especially since he offers speed and one of the top gloves in the game.
Boras typically advises his clients, such as Bourn, to test free agency unless an extension can be worked out that's hard to pass up.
"I'm kind of the recipient of offers," Boras said. "I'd love to get a 10-year offer for every player I represent. The Braves have yet to talk with me about Bourn. He's a player I'm very excited about. He's got the speed and the defensive skills that teams want. The market for a player with Bourn's skills is better than ever."
Bourn is hitting .271 with 13 home runs, 158 RBI, 99 doubles and 234 stolen bases over six major league seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2006-07), Astros (2008-11) and Braves (2011-present).
