Bootees to knock your socks off

Val Pierce is back again with her latest book "20 to Make Knitted Baby Booties". Val is an avid designer with a number of books to have come off her needles and hook, in the past few months. She is diverse in her patterns from Teddy Bears to shrugs. This time it is all about the bootee.

You will see designs that are frilly to fun and playful to organic for boys and girls. The patterns don't require much yarn (a ball of yarn or less maybe stash) or time. Val says they are easy enough for children learning to knit. She includes helpful hints and tips. The book is a small sized paperback that will nicely fit into your knitting bag. The photographs are well done and you will enjoy deciding which pattern to knit first.

Baby Snugs are my favorites, that have an organic look to them. Val knit her's in cashmere with a bit of eyelash edging for both boys and girls. Bumblebee Boots are just that. Yellow and black striped bee booties with eyes, antenni and a smile. Adorable for spring. You will agree that A Pair of Ducklings, yellow booties with a 3-D duck head are must knits. The body is nicely textured and worked in a simple two row repeat. A knit 1, purl 1 row followed by a knit row.

It is easy to get addicted knitting for babies. This is a great way to start if you are a beginner. if you are advanced, you will be able to knit these in your sleep. It would be nice to wake up and find you finished your knitting projects while you sleeped. What was the last thing you knitted for a baby?

The Black Sheep Yarn located at 12 Old Barn Rd. P.O. Box 103 Kent, Connecticut 06757, (860) 927-3808 is having a beginning Fair Isle Knitting class. The class isn't until April, but I want you to get a jump on it. It will be held Saturdays, Apr. 15  and Apr. 22, (2 sessions). The instructor is Shirley Spencer (two thumbs up) and the seminar is $40, plus kit fee.
Shirley Spencer has been knitting for over 12 years.  Her love of fiber started with quilting. Once she took up the knitting needles, there was no turning back. Currently, Shirley is the President of the "Candlewood Valley Knitting Guild " (CVKG) and has been for the past 3 years.  At BSY, she can regularly be found at the Sunday afternoon knitting circle.  Shirley enjoys writing her own fair isle patterns (see slideshow left).  In two easy lessons, you will come away with a knitted handbag that she calls "The Black Sheep Bag" that you can use as-is or felted, your choice. Call the store to reserve a spot.

The CVKG meets the third Wednesday of the month (this month is an exception January 25) at the Connecticut Brookfield Public Library, 6:30 p.m.
