Books are plentiful at garage sales

An “average” garage sale has a smattering of this and that. You generally will find some clothes, books, household equipment, furniture, toys, records, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, costume jewelry, holiday decorations, baby equipment, small electronics and an assortment of the proverbial miscellaneous.

An “above average” garage sale, on the other hand, is one which has more than just a few of this or that. It offers a lot, a sizeable, worth mentioning and noting amount, of the garage sale stuff that you like as a buyer. It has the kind of treasure that appeals to you specifically, calls your name and beckons you to attend.

If you like to read (and kudos to you!), the garage sale-book sale is that kind of targeted sale. If you appreciate, even savor, the feel of a real, non-electronic, book in your very own clutches (and kudos to you once again!), seize the chance to pay pennies (well fifty or one hundred pennies anyhow) for that next read.

Think book club. Think summer reads on the beach. Think entertainment or learning. Be practical or romantic about your choice. You can pick one (or more) and read it from cover to cover. There are several places to do so.

  • Trinity Lutheran Church, the big church on the corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nall in Mission, is having its book sale on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Books are sorted by category. They are found on tables and shelves. You will find Christian fiction, romance novels, true crime and mystery as well as popular chick lit. There are cookbooks and comic books. There is a range of non fiction from travel to military to gardening to sports and more. The gamut is covered; readers will certainly find something to read. There are also CDs, DVDs, videos, magazines, sheet music and records. Although this is not the Church’s “Great American Garage Sale,” there are a few other options in the building, just to make it feel more garage sale like (especially since we are all so anxious for the season to begin). You may just add some clothes, jewelry, or linens to your book purchases. Proceeds from the sale fund the charities of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
  • St. Mark’s United Methodist Church has quite a following for its book sale. Readers and resellers travel near and far to attend their giant sale, year after year. The Church is located at 6422 Santa Fe in Overland Park. The sale runs on Thursday and Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, April 6 from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is held in the basement.
