Book Review: Where The Girls Are by D.L. King

Where The Girls Are, Edited By D.L. King
(Cleis Press Inc., 2009)

This is an anthology for readers who love women who love women. Each story is chocked full of strong, sexy ladies and the big cities that bring them together. These are stories about women who arrive in the big city, wide-eyed and hopeful, drawn to city lights, hot clubs and sexual opportunities. These urban settings play a major role of each story in all sorts of interesting ways. The prose styles are as varied as the situations, ranging from richly detailed to sparely snappy. These stories arouse, and some even inspire.

I seldom read anthologies, mostly because I’ve found that I typically only enjoy two or three of the usual dozen stories, but I have to slog through the mud to find the gems. So I agreed to review Where The Girls Are with some trepidation. I admit there are some stinkers in this list of nineteen stories, but for the most part, I was pleased. I am not a fan of erotica, but the quality of the writing kept me turning pages. I’ve always thought of “sexual diversity” as differentiating between the basic categories of sexual orientation, but it is so much more than that. This anthology proves that within the category of lesbian relationships, lies a plethora of variations of desires, fantasies and fetishes.

These nineteen vignettes are fast paced and average ten pages each. They are written by some notable authors, including Charlotte Dare, A. D. R. Forte, Cari Z, Jessica Lennox and Sommer Marsden. The topics ranged from getting even with your high school nemesis only to have the tables turned, to taking a job in a restaurant where everyone dresses like move stars and the owner like to bed the staff, to being taken to your first BDMS club and finding that a hot spanking from a butch woman feels much better than it sounds. There is not enough room here to go into each story line, but suffice to say there is likely something here for everyone who likes hot w/w stories.

My only real complaint was that each of the stories were a tad predictable. That did not, however, detract from my enjoyment. For the most part, they are well written, interesting, and most get pretty steamy. This is an erotica anthology that I can recommend. If you’re the type of reader who enjoys fast paced, well written prose and developed characters in your erotic romance stories, then this should be right up your alley.
