Gortner, Brendan puts his life on the line for his princess and relative and ends up making some powerful enemies along the way.
"The Tudor Conspiracy" is the follow-up to "The Tudor Secret". It follows the adventures of Brendan as he goes to London to protect Princess Elizabeth from some very powerful enemies including Simon Renard, an ambassador to Emperor Charles V and Prince Philip II of Spain. Simon Renard is desperate to have Queen Mary marry Prince Philip and bring England fully back to Catholicism and in the clutches of Spain. He is also determined to remove Princess Elizabeth from the picture. Brendan steps in to work as a double agent. He's seemingly a spy for Simon Renard, but desperately trying to save Elizabeth. When Brendan meets a gorgeous and captivating lady-in-waiting to the queen named Sybilla, Brendan believes he has a new ally, but is she just putting him in more danger? Mixed with intrigue, scheming, mystery, and history, "The Tudor Conspiracy" is a full-on look at the dangerous days at the Tudor court during the reign of Queen Mary.
Gortner has done something amazing in historical fiction. In a time where all the main characters in historical fiction are mainly female, Gortner has created a strong, complex, and fascinating male main character. Brendan is is well-written character that readers will find themselves drawn to. Whether it be his Tudor blood or his loyalty to Princess Elizabeth, readers will love and root for Brendan. Kudos to Gortner for giving a male character a voice in historical fiction.
Gortner is a wonderful writers who pays such attention to detail. He brings the Tudor court under Queen Mary to life. His attention to history, the major players of the Tudor court, and his vibrant and descriptive writing make for a great read. You'll feel like you're disappearing into history when reading a novel by Gortner.
"The Tudor Conspiracy" is a strong novel about the Tudor period. Let's hope the adventures of Brendan are continued as Princess Elizabeth continues to navigate her sister's court and eventually become queen!
