Jeffery Deaver is the bestselling author of mystery and crime novels. His most popular to date has been “The Bone Collector” which was made into a movie. “The Coffin Dancer” is the second novel in the Lincoln Rhyme series. Lincoln Rhyme is a criminalist for the NYPD who after an accident at a crime scene becomes a quadriplegic. He now relies on Amelia Sachs, a New York City cop to be his arms and legs and together they solve crimes.
In “The Coffin Dancer” the Dancer has struck again and Lincoln drops everything to try and catch him. There are three witnesses to a cover up and the Dancer has been hired to kill them. When the first one is killed by a bomb on a plane the remaining two are put in protective custody but the Dancer always seems to be a step ahead of them. With Amelia’s help Lincoln is now in a race to outsmart a dangerous assassin long enough to get the witnesses to the trial.
Overall the action in this book is intense and non-stop and the reader gets a rare view into the deranged mind of a killer. The details in the forensic science are enough to entice any Patricia Cornwell fan but the story gets long winded when the author goes into the inner workings of airplanes. Regardless it is a very interesting read with plenty of surprises and plot twists. One of the best twists was when the true identity of the killer is revealed.
