Stress Eater Diet by Dr. Robert Posner and Linda Hlivka contains very sound advice on how to combat stress through diet and exercise. While the cover is obviously aimed towards women, men would benefit from the information as well.
The chapter on physical versus emotional eating is very well though out and loaded with helpful information and statistics. For example, 43% of people deal with stress by snacking on or overeating unhealthy foods as discovered through a survey conducted by the American Psychological Association. Keeping a diary of what you eat and how you feel during and after helps to break the cycle of emotional eating. In a different study it was noted that those who kept a journal lost twice as much weight as those who did not!
There are only a few references to consuming diet soda or snacking on low calorie foods containing Splenda or Nutrasweet, but as a health coach, I wish there were none. Too many Americans consume artificial sweeteners which in themselves create a host of health problems, not the least of which is adrenal fatigue. If one craves soda, it's very easy to substitute 3/4 sparkling water and 1/4 juice. Alas, if the choice is soda or diet, you're better off with the diet in small amounts.
