“Storm Prey” is John Sandford’s twentieth novel in the popular Prey detective novels featuring Lucas Davenport. Davenport started out as a detective for the Minneapolis Police Department in the first few novels. He is now an investigator for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
The story begins with a robbery at a hospital pharmacy by a gang of bikers. It was all supposed to be simple, go in, get the drugs and get out. Unfortunately one of the employees ends up dead and someone saw them driving out of the hospital parking lot. The witness turns out to be Lucas’ wife Weather who is a surgeon at the hospital so therefore Lucas gets involved in the investigation.
Characters from other books and series (Marcy Sherrill and Virgil Flowers) appear in this one and help out in the investigation process. The crime pretty much solves itself because in an effort to cover up their crimes most of the bad guys end up killing each other until there is only one left standing. Since Weather is under protective custody some of the story takes place at the hospital where she is involved in a separation of conjoined twins and the details of the surgery takes away from the main plot.
Overall it is an easy and fast paced read but there are no plot twists and the ending is predictable. Although it is entertaining to read about the paranoia of the bad guys as they backstab and kill each other. The characters are familiar but a Lucas Davenport novel is always an interesting read.
