A parenting book that addresses the source of our cultural decline, the lack of proper parental responsibility and instruction, and offers sound biblical advice on how to teach children as Jesus taught His disciples.”

In America today, children control more of their instruction and teaching than they should. Parents, with no established religion or faith of their own, allow children to make up their own minds about what is truth and what is not.

Many think that America began its recent decline when prayer was taken out of school. We blame the politics of the day and accept the continual degradation of our quality of life as if there is nothing we can do.

There is much we can do.

Proverbs 4:13 urges us to ‘Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.’ In Disciple Like Jesus for Parents: Following Jesus’ Method and Enjoying the Blessings of Children by Alan Melton and Paul Dean, the focus is on protecting our children by way of instruction.

This book begins with the need for biblical instruction (Part One) and moves on to an examination of how Jesus taught his disciples (Parts Two through Five) giving tips, advice, and practical ways parents today can model their parenting skills to that of Jesus.

The advice given in this book is not specific to a certain age group, though there are portions that specifically address certain age groups. Written to two parent homes as well as single parent homes, the focus is on creating a godly example for children to follow just as Jesus did.It is a lifestyle that children will not only learn but see lived out by the parents.

We often learn more from teaching than we do from being taught. If the reader of this book applies these principles, they may find a deeper relationship with Jesus as well. I was encouraged to see there were some hard truths in this book. Teaching our children of wisdom and honor, we can claim the promise found in Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”

Sound practical advice, well written, I highly recommend it. To learn more about the authors and their ministry, visit their website at www.disciplelikejesus.com.
