Reconnecting with your true love is like a dream, a midsummer night dream. Two people torn apart by family and different lives finally get the chance to reconnect after many years, but their collective stubbornness may keep them achieving love and happiness again. Will the magic and allure of a midsummer night and remembering their past bring them back together? In "Love on a Midsummer Night" by Christy English, readers get to experience a Regency style re-telling of the classic William Shakespeare play: "A Midsummer Night's Dream".
"Love on a Midsummer Night" is the story of Raymond, Earl of Pembroke and Arabella, Duchess of Hawthorne. They were once young sweethearts, but torn apart by Arabella's father forcing her to marry the much older Duke of Hawthorne. Raymond takes Arabella doing this as a betrayal and disappears into drinking and bedding random women to forget Arabella. After the death of Arabella's husband, she is put in danger when the new slimy and conniving Duke of Hawthorne wants to make her his wife, force her into his bed, and take her remaining wealth. Arabella turns to her childhood love, Raymond to protect her. Despite Raymond's hurt at Arabella leaving him years ago, he protects her and whisks her away to Derbyshire during a midsummer festival. Raymond must fight his anger at Arabella leaving him for another when they were younger while Arabella must struggle with her feelings for Raymond and her need for independence. The two try to stay out of love, but fail as the enchantment of a midsummer night surrounds them. Will Raymond and Arabella overcome an evil duke and their stubbornness so they can reconnect on a midsummer night?
"Love on a Midsummer Night" is another delightful take on a William Shakespeare play by English. English has a gift of taking works by Shakespeare and putting her own twist on it. English's re-telling of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" set during the Regency period is another success. English creates her own story, but brings elements of Shakespeare's work perfectly into the novel.
The love story between Raymond and Arabella is beautifully written. You can feel their connection and understand what they meant to each other. You can also feel their hurt towards one another. Their relationship is complicated, complex, and beautifully written. It is a moving and powerful relationship.
One of the best parts of the novel are the strong women throughout it and the bonds they form with another. Arabella, her best friend, her best friend's former lover's new wife, and Raymond's actress mistress all form bonds with one another and show true respect and admiration towards one another. There are no cat fights or nasty barbs being thrown between these women. Instead, they work together and understand one another.
English has another success on her hands. "Love on a Midsummer Night" is beautifully written and will leave readers captivated. You'll be wishing that you find love on a midsummer night!
