I'm honestly sick to death of comic events. Really and truly. Frankly I'm not sure why I even bought Siege.
So how did it end up my book of the week?
Well honestly, it's just that good. Even after having the plot twist ruined for me by a friend, I still managed to be shocked by it. About a thousand times a month you read about how a comic "will shock you". This one actually manages to do it.
This is one brutal comic.
And the more I read of Siege, the more I begin to believe that it's as much a story about The Sentry as it is about Osborn. Since taking the reins on the character in the pages of New Avengers (and more recently in Dark Avengers) Bendis has attempted time and again to fill in the blank spots of this ill-defined character. Since then, Sentry has died several times, had his powers re-defined at least twice, changed origins 7-8 times and even brought his wife back from the dead. No one seems to know what's going on with the character, including Bendis.
That may just change with Siege.
Bendis is setting up Marvel's most powerful hero to be a mad god on the loose. And after the events of issue #2, it is inevitable that Thor will face the Sentry as Ragnarok falls around them.
Also, besides being a pretty decent script, Siege #2 boasts artist Olivier Coipel turning in the best of work of his career so far. Aside from the last panels which feature layouts that are physically impossible, every page is smoking.
My only real complaint is that the book's pacing is uneven. The first half is a roaring battle, while the second half features Marvel's heroes gathering for a debriefing. It's more than a little anti-climactic.
That said, I'm on board. With only two issues left, I expect Bendis and Coipel will amp up the action to 11. Expect big changes. Expect death. Expect the unexpected.
