Bonnie McKee might not sound like a familiar name, but she has co-written a slew of pop hits for artists like Katy Perry, Britney Spears and Ke$ha. As a songwriter, McKee has seen songs many songs she's worked on reach no. 1 on Billboard: "Teenage Dream," "Hold It Against Me," "California Gurls," and others. Now that she is taking a turn being the one in front of the mic, her debut single on Epic Records, "American Girl," begins its life on the Hot 100 chart.
McKee originally premiered "American Girl" in June with a lip-sync video featuring her famous friends like Perry, Ke$ha, Macklemore and others singing along to her bouncy electro-pop single. A month later, she unveiled the track's official music video, which saw her and some girlfriends stir up trouble in Hollywood. Among the chaos, she steals a Ford Mustang and throws a raging pool party.
"American Girl" was released to iTunes on July 23 so it took a month for the pop ditty to break Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The song has been performing steadily on top 40 radio throughout the summer and it currently nears the top 100 on iTunes' music chart.
No. 100 on Billboard's Hot 100 is a good place to start climbing and hopefully become a literal started-from-the-bottom success story. "American Girl" also marks McKee's first ever entry on the chart as an artist.
Singers who have found themselves in the same spot on Billboard include Spears and Beyonce. Britney's "Do Somethin'," a bonus track on her "Greatest Hits: My Prerogative" album, was released as single in international markets only. The quirky pop track would surprisingly hit no. 100 on Billboard for one week following its placement in shows like MTV's "The Hills." Like Spears, Beyonce chose to shoot a video for her "4" song, "Dance For You," just for fun. The song later cracked the bottom of the Hot 100 chart, but it later climbed and peaked at no. 78.
Many artists have found themselves at the no. 100 spot on Billboard so hopefully Bonnie makes a memorable ascension to the top.
