Pop singer-songwriter Bonnie McKee premiered the music video for her new song "Sleepwalker" on Thursday. In the horror movie-inspired clip, she and a female companion battle a horde of zombies at a party.
McKee calls "Sleepwalker" her "InBeTwingle," which means it will be a promo track released between her debut single "American Girl" and whatever she selects as her second official single. The dark EDM track was produced by Bonnie's boyfriend Oliver Goldstein and DJ Boys Noise. It was inspired by a "kind of dark time, when things were falling apart and I was slipping down a downward spiral," she tells NYLON magazine.
Compared to her bouncy electro-pop single "American Girl," new song "Sleepwalker" has a harder EDM edge. The dark dance production recalls DeadMau5's "Ghosts N Stuff" with McKee's chilling vocals at the center of it all. "I swallowed some pills / I felt nothing," she sings on the club banger. Bonnie seems to reflect on her fall after signing with Warner Bros. records in 2004, releasing debut album "Trouble" and later being dropped from the label. She turns her hard times into a mesmerizing pop track.
McKee gets her Michael Jackson "Thriller" moment in the "Sleepwalker" music video. The scary clip plays out like a short, vintage horror movie with Bonnie and a female friend caught up in some trouble. At the party, the two live it up before their friends become part of the undead kind. Bonnie and her friend battle zombies on the way out and watch the city in shambles from afar. A surprise twist ending makes the "Sleepwalker" the perfect clip for the Halloween season.
McKee has co-written big hits for Katy Perry (a bulk of the "Teenage Dream" singles and "Roar") and Britney Spears ("Hold It Against Me") so now she is looking to make a name for herself as an artist. She signed with a record deal with Epic Records last year and released the buoyant electro-pop single "American Girl" this past summer. It has so far peaked at no. 87 on Billboard's Hot 100.
