Bonnie Franklin, a.k.a. Ann Romano on the hit TV sitcom “One Day at a Time,” died on Friday, March 1, at the age of 69. The cause of death was complications from pancreatic cancer which she had just been diagnosed with in September.
Romano played a single divorced mother raising two teenage daughters on “One Day at a Time.” Her daughters were played by Valerie Bertinelli and MacKenzie Phillips. The show tackled tough issues such as birth control, premarital sex, rape, suicide and menopause. It ran from 1975 to 1984 and was in the top 20 for eight seasons.
Bertinelli expressed her sorrow after learning of Franklin’s death, "My heart is breaking. The years on `One Day At A Time' were some of the happiest of my life, and along with Pat and Mackenzie, we were a family in every way. She taught me how to navigate this business and life itself with grace and humor, and to always be true to yourself. I will miss her terribly."
MacKenzie Phillips posted on her official Twitter account , “Remembering my friend. Rest in peace. Bonnie Franklin.”
Bonnie Franklin was a longtime activist in the war on AIDS and the Stroke Association of Southern California.
