Next up in our Bonnaroo spotlight is Hesta Prynn – whose music fits somewhere between dance and hip-hop. Julie Potash started as part of the NYC-based, all-female hip-hop group Northern State; her stage name, of course, is taken from the novel The Scarlett Letter.
Prynn has worked as a DJ, and has self-released several remixes of other artists – she has so many fans within the music community that she has also been remixed by other artists. She’s toured with Jay-Z, 30 Seconds to Mars, Tegan and Sara, and Kelis. The best quote to describe her music actually comes from Sara Quin (of Tegan and Sara):
Hesta Prynn’s album makes me wish I was a dance choreographer or in a dance posse. It’s not just enough to just dance alone to these songs, I actually feel as though I need an entire group of people behind me as a visual representation of how amazing I feel when I’m listening (and dancing) to this music.
Hesta Prynn’s first solo EP, Can We Go Wrong, was released last summer. It featured more of an electronic sound than the hip-hop offered by Northern State, and earned Prynn a lot of critical acclaim. (The video for the title track can be seen to the left.)
She describes herself as a child of the 90’s, and draws from that era for musical influences. She’s also an avid fan of old-school Nintendo and horror movies. Intrigued fashion designer Daryl K made Prynn the face of his spring collection, and she walked the runway in his show during New York’s 2011 Fashion Week.
Your chance to see Prynn’s style up close – and hear her sing, rap, DJ, and more – comes this June at Bonnaroo. For more info, visit the official Bonnaroo website.
