As the days tick away until the June 12 start of Bonnaroo 2014, the news is coming fast and furious. Just this week has brought the release of the daily schedule, a number of artist additions, and the beginning of single-day ticket sales. On May 7, Bonnaroo delivered its latest piece of the lineup puzzle, unveiling details and special guests for all three of the year's Superjams.
The biggest puzzle on this year's lineup has been the "? Superjam" that popped up on the initial lineup poster in February. Since that time, Bonnaroo has kept a tight lip about this show, not revealing any participants or even what style of music would be featured. Now that Superjam has finally had its question mark removed. Guitarist Derek Trucks of The Allman Brothers and Bonnaroo 2014 performers Tedeschi Trucks Band will be leading the Friday night Superjam and, judging from the raft of special guests, one can surmise that the setlist will contain a fair amount of blues, funk, and soul. Trucks' wife and bandmate Susan Tedeschi will join him, as will Chaka Khan, Taj Mahal, Ben Folds, Andrew Bird, Soullive's Eric Krasno, drummer James Gadson, Los Lobos' David Hidalgo, annd producer Adam Deitch.
The Saturday night Superjam, previously only billed as "Skrillex and Friends", was also a bit of a head scratcher for some, who wondered if an EDM-centric Superjam could work. With this announcement, it is now clear Skrillex intends his Superjam to travel well beyond the boundaries of electronic music. The guest lineup kicks off with two Rock and Roll Hall of Fame powerhouses in Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart and The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger. Keeping up the parade of musicians from diverse genre backgrounds are Damien Marley, Janelle Monae, Chance the Rapper, Zedd, Big Gigantic, Warpaint, and Thundercat.
The final Superjam, Sunday's Bluegrass Situation Superjam, was believed to be mostly intact, with BGS Stage performers Lake Street Dive, The Lone Bellow, Sarah Jarosz, The Black Lillies, and Shovels & Ropes performing. While all of these artists will be involved, Bonnaroo and Bluegrass Situation leader Ed Helms weren't done with the Superjam lineup yet. Joining these artists will be Ed Helms' band The Lonesome Trio, country megastar Dierks Bentley, Robert Ellis, Della Mae, Bryan Sutton, and Dave Johnston of Yonder Mountain String Band.
Bonnaroo 2014 will be held June 12-15 in Manchester, Tennessee. In addition to the three Superjam performances, featured artists include Seasick Steve with John Paul Jones, Jack White, Elton John, and Kanye West. You can see the full daily schedule here.
