Bonnaroo continued their Tuesday and Thursday tradition of releasing 2014 lineup clues today, Jan. 21, by releasing their fifth one through their Instagram account. The Bonnaroo Clue game is a long standing tradition where Bonnaroo organizers use social media to give fans hints about a few of the artists on the 2014 lineup in the weeks leading up to the Feb. 19 lineup drop date. You can see our reports on the previous four clues here.
After a series of clues that many have complained are too easy, Bonnaroo responded today with the hardest clue yet. The clue features what looks to be a blue and white striped ambulance. This is the first time the audio portion of the clue, available to listeners of Radio Bonnaroo, has been instrumental. The audio portion was "What country is the band from?"
Looking at the ambulance, most fans guess the "flag" that makes up the body of the ambulance is either the flag of Greece or Finland, with most leaning more towards Greece. So most believe the clue references a band from one of those countries, or a band that references one of them in some way.
This clue has caused more spirited debate on Facebook, Instagram, and the Inforoo message board than all the others combined, with well over a dozen bands thrown out as possibilities. Here are the most common choices:
First Aid Kit
Aside from Greece and Finland, there is also some debate about a possible Swedish connection. Add in the ambulance and many have come to the conclusion that the answer is Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit. While it fits well with the ambulance and is a band that works well with Bonnaroo's booking style, the colors for the Swedish flag are all wrong.
Aside from the fact that Widespread Panic is at Bonnaroo every couple of years and so is a safe guess for any lineup, many fans also think they fit this clue well. Assuming the flag is the Greek flag, that could point to the city of Athens. While Widespread Panic aren't Greek, they do hail from another Athens, the one in Georgia. Additionally, an ambulance or similar emergency vehicle is something you would likely see anywhere there was a "widespread panic."
One of the breakout tent acts of Bonnaroo 2013, many believe the clue symbolizes a return for Foals in 2014. The band's lead singer, Yannis Phillipakis, is Greek and the groups debut album, "Holy Fire" sounds like something that might require the assistance of an ambulance.
The Last Drive
The Last Drive are not as well known as many other artists on this list, but they fit the clue very well. First, being from Greece, they clear the flag requirement. Second, for many an ambulance ride is "The Last Drive" so that fits well too.
