Bonnaroo continued their Tuesday and Thursday tradition of releasing 2014 lineup clues today, Jan. 16, through their Instagram account. The Bonnaroo Clue game is a long standing tradition where Bonnaroo organizers use social media to give fans hints about a few of the artists on the 2014 lineup in the weeks leading up to the Feb. 19 lineup drop date. You can see our reports on the previous three clues here.
After Tuesday's clue was almost universally solved as being for Chvrches, Bonnaroo has returned to a bit of ambiguity with Clue #4 and the fans on Bonnaroo's Facebook page as well as the clue sleuths on the Inforoo fan board seem torn about the meaning of this one. The picture shows a blue birthday hat with red and silver stars on a tiled surface. You can see the photo for yourself here.
While there are numerous guesses for this clue, the various social media and message forums seem to have narrowed the most likely choices down to just a few. Here they are:
The most obvious choice from looking at the photo is British rockers Bloc Party. The hat is definitely the kind you'd wear to a party and the tiled surface could be construed as blocks. As much sense as Bloc Party makes in the context of the picture, the band went on indefinite hiatus in 2013 so unless they've chosen Bonnaroo to make their return, this one is less likely than it seems.
Alt-rockers Cake are the second most popular choice among clue sleuths. Assuming the hat is a birthday hat, the best thing to have with a birthday hat is a birthday cake. Cake doesn't currently have any tour dates listed on their website, but they've long been on many a Bonnaroo fan's wishlist, so it's possible.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have been on a lot of "likely" lists due to a Louisville, KY date on the Monday after Bonnaroo and many think this clue confirms him. The link here is with The Birthday Party, the band that brought Cave to the public eye in the late '70s. Cave's eclectic brand of rock would fit in well with Bonnaroo's atmosphere.
Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band
2009 headliner Bruce Springsteen is one of the more popular guesses for two reasons. First, the Radio Bonnaroo hint for the clue was "party" but enunciated in a way that seemed to make it more like "Part-E", leading some to The E Street Band. Additionally, the red and blue on the party hat could possibly link back to Springsteen's hit "Born in the U.S.A."
The Purple One has been bandied about as a possible Bonnaroo headliner due to a series of shows and a festival slot at Essence Fest on 4th of July weekend. The people who believe this clue refers to Prince point to one of his biggest hits, "1999", as in "tonight we're gonna party like it's 1999." The hat isn't specifically a birthday hat and could be for a New Years party as well. While the hat being blue and not purple tends to tip a bit away from Prince, it could be that Bonnaroo didn't want to make it too easy.
