While the first Bonnaroo Clue for the 2013 lineup has been informally floating around the Inforoo message boards for a few days now via a random insertion in a street team member's handbill stack, the folks at Bonnaroo made it official this morning, releasing Bonnaroo 2013 lineup clue #1 on their Facebook page.
Insanely difficult and frustratingly vague, the Bonnaroo Clue game is an annual tradition in the month leading up to the lineup announcement, typically in mid to late February. Bonnaroo releases clues via a variety of outlets including their Facebook and Twitter pages, via announcement on Radio Bonnaroo, and have even been known to hide posters in random locations around the country and give vague hints as to the location.
Here's the clue:
Rising son of man, the future was less certain, Human contact is gone.
As always, each of these lines can be interpreted in a number of ways. Rising son of man could refer to some sort of evolutionary or technological jump, such as a cyborg or android. It could also refer to an artist from New Orleans, referencing the traditional "House of the Rising Sun" song. It could also reference an uprising or revolution of some variety.
The next two lines seem to be meant to be taken together and clue sleuths are seizing on the jarring change in tense between them. The future was less certain, but human contact is gone. There hasn't been a great logic made for this yet among the solvers, but Bonnaroo Clues are all about tiny details and this is one that jumps out.
Some well reasoned artist guesses from Inforoo and Facebook so far include David Bowie, Frank Ocean, Japandroids, Rage Against the Machine, Man or Astroman?, and The Who.
Hopefully Bonnaroo Clue hint giver Gary Chardonnay, who has been silent since the last set of 2012 clues, will awaken soon and provide some guidance.
If you'd like to join in on the Bonnaroo Clue solving madness, there's plenty of discussion on the Facebook and Twitter pages. On Twitter, tag your guesses or speculation with the hashtag #rooclues. But the absolute best place for Bonnaroo Clue information is on the Inforoo message board, which has a dedicated Clue solving section and a long history of obsessively worrying at the clues until they're solved.
We'll be reporting and speculating on each Bonnaroo Clue as they're released so click Subscribe at the top of the page to get the latest delivered right to your inbox.
