Bonnaroo has historically been perceived as a hippie festival, bringing all the jams bands together for one gigantic marijuana cloud and hacky sack convention. Over time, however, the landscape has changed and all genres are showcased alongside bands like String Cheese and Phish. This year, dancing your ass off will be a non-negotiable if you find yourself inside a tent with one of these three party monsters!
Matt & Kim (3:15pm-4:30pm on Friday):
Anyone that has witnessed a single song of any set Matt & Kim has ever played knows exactly how much fun this New York duo is in the live arena. Hyperbole aside, the level of intensity never drops when these two are around. They don’t need no stinking pyro, lights, lasers, or confetti: just the rump-shaking goodness of Kim on drums and the bubbly precision of Matt on keys and vocals. Together, they are an unmatched dancing machine and This Tent will need some structural rebuilding after Matt & Kim bring the tent down with their high-tempo summer soundtracks.
Gogol Bordello (2:00am-3:30am on Saturday):
The Gypsy Punk all-stars are festival staples at this point in their career, but no where do they rip quite as hard as they do at Bonnaroo. Singer Eugene Hutz brings his band of merry men (and women) to a farm that has embraced the multi-cultural pack as one of their own. After delivering a breathtaking performance at Coachella this year, you can expect Gogol Bordello to make it a personal mission to get you off of the ground and dancing the night away. Well, since it’s starting at 2am, maybe you’ll be dancing until the sun comes up!
Bootsy Collins (7:00pm-8:30pm on Saturday):
The funkiest man on the planet (and potentially a few others) is back with a new lease on funk. Hopefully bringing along half of the awesome guests on his new album, Bootsy Collins will give newcomers some jaw-dropping moments of brilliant bass playing, while showing the Roo patrons that no matter how hot it is, it’s always important to look good. With amazing bassists (Claypool, etc.) playing over the weekend, the amount of guest stars and pure bass magic erupting from The Other Tent on Saturday may never be matched again.
