When "Bones" season 8 began, Pelant (Andrew Leeds) was still very much a concern, but they thought they might have solved that problem by the end of the premiere. That wasn't the case, and on Wednesday, Jan. 9, FOX released photos from his return in episode 12, "The Corpse on the Canopy."
In this "Bones" episode, Hodgins (TJ Thyne) and Angela (Michaela Conlin) are going to wake up after being drugged to find a bloody corpse—the victim turns out to be a Special Forces agent who was working for the world's biggest supplier of mercenaries—hanging in the canopy of their bed and flower petals around Michael's crib. That is quite the disturbing image just to think about! They believe that Pelant is out for revenge against Hodgins. In the premiere, "The Future in the Past," we saw quite the confrontation between Hodgins and Pelant in the cemetery, with Hodgins displaying un-Hodgins-like behavior. Hodgins will go far when it comes to those he cares about. And now Pelant has made quite the statement with this set-up, but is that just part of Pelant's plan? Hodgins wants to go after him, but Booth (David Boreanaz) knows they should work within the system and not go against protocol. However, that doesn't mean that Hodgins and Angela will listen, and they're going to begin their own investigation for the sake of their family. But was that Pelant's plan all along for Hodgins?
The "Corpse on the Canopy" photos, which you can see in the slideshow at the top of this article, show Angela and Hodgins waking up to the horrible sight, a look at the remains (on the canopy and in the lab) and the investigation that follows. They'll find a lead in the X-rays, hope to find a connection by looking at Hodgins' blood, and find a way to implicate Pelant in the case. Will Booth be able to catch Pelant this time?
Also returning in this episode is Reed Diamond as FBI Special Agent Hayes Flynn, whose actions in the premiere cast some doubt on which side he's on. Executive producer Hart Hanson has called Flynn "an extremely part of the Pelant story." Can Booth and the Jeffersonian team trust him? Also to note in the guest cast are Patricia Belcher returning as AUSA Caroline Julian and Darin Toonder appearing as Dr. Ethan Sawyer. Sawyer was the one to leave behind that triangle clue for the team in his institution room.
