Other day, by a pure stroke of chance, I got to meet in person and talk to one of my favorites skateboarding personalities of all time, Stacy Peralta.
Most skaters around the world likely have seen the name Peralta at some point, either on a magazine ad, a skate deck, wheel or video. Stacy has been in the scene since the 70’s and, from pro skater to moviemaker, he has done pretty much everything in between.
Powell Peralta was one of first companies to produce skateboard videos, featuring a select group of sponsored athletes under the title “Bones Brigade”. Back then, youngsters such as Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Tommy Guerrero and Rodney Mullen were far away from being household names they are today.
Even for people like me, who grew up watching the Bones Brigades’ VHS tapes, Stacy’s latest movie is definitely inspiring.
The film tells the journey of that team, documenting the trials and tribulations of six teenagers who ended up revolutionizing modern skateboarding.
“Bones Brigade: An Autobiography” brings to light a perspective of the team members that many of us would otherwise never see. Highlighting the far-from-perfect human nature of each individual, the movie touches on personal aspects of their lives and reveals intimate details of their upbringing during the 80’s.
