Anglers can target redfish and bonefish during the final fundraising tournament in the annual Robert James Sales Redbone Trilogy series, set for Friday through Sunday, Nov. 1-3. About 40 boats are registered, according to Redbone founder Gary Ellis, but more are welcome.
The Redbone Celebrity Tournament is headquartered at the Islander Resort, A Guy Harvey Outpost, located at mile marker (MM) 82.1 oceanside. Events are to begin Thursday, Oct. 31, with a welcome reception and early registration for anglers and guides.
Several notables have fished past Redbone tournaments including National Basketball Association Hall of Fame inductee John Havlicek, Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, National Hockey League Florida Panthers coach Kevin Dineen and Jimbo Meador, the inspiration for the book and hit movie "Forrest Gump."
Celebrities and tournament veterans who are expected to fish the 2013 event include NASA astronaut Bruce Melnick, MLB's Washington Nationals manager David "Davey" Johnson and International Game Fish Association Hall of Famer Stu Apte.
The angling events fund research into the genetic disease cystic fibrosis and raise more than a million dollars annually to "catch the cure."
Thursday, Oct. 31, anglers can register for the Superfly, a one-day, one-fly competition sponsored by The Fly Shop of Miami and held prior to the Redbone. Superfly action is to begin at 6:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 1, with a continental breakfast served at the Lorelei dock, MM 82 bayside. Boats can depart the Lorelei at 7 a.m. and fishing continues until lines out at 3 p.m.
The Redbone kick-off party and silent auction are set for 6-9 p.m. Friday at the Islander Resort. The auction closes at 8 p.m.
Continental breakfast is served Saturday and Sunday at 6 a.m. and boats depart at 6:30 a.m. Anglers can head out Saturday after a 7 a.m. blessing of the fleet and fish both days until lines-out at 3 p.m.
Dockside parties for anglers and guides are scheduled for 3-5 p.m. both days at the Lorelei and the public is invited to attend.
Sunday, cocktails and an awards banquet are scheduled to start at 6 p.m. under the Redbone tent on the Islander Resort beach.
Registration is $3,500 for a two-person angler team or $3,000 for an individual angler to fish, including two days' charter fees with a professional guide. The entry fee for the Superfly is $350 per angler who also fishes the Redbone or $500 per angler otherwise.
Limited social tickets are available for $500 per person and can be obtained by calling the Redbone Gallery, located at 200 Morada Way in Islamorada, at 305-664-4278.
