Bond at the Grammy Awards: 'Skyfall' scores a windfall for Adele & Thomas Newman

At the 56th Annual Grammy Awards held last night, January 26, in Los Angeles, 'Skyfall,' finally gave Bond awards that were long overdue. The most recent in a long line of James Bond films, it has also won the most awards for the franchise.

Not eligible for a 2012 Grammy nomination because of a late release date, of October 23, 2012, 'Skyfall' earned nominations in the film categories at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media (Thomas Newman) and for Best Song Written For Visual Media (Adele); winning both. The eligibility period for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards was October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013, according to the Recording Academy.

Adele's victory at the 56th annual Grammy awards marked the 10th Grammy Award for the chanteuse with her songwriting partner, Paul Epworth. Unable to make it to the ceremony, Adele tweeted, "Wish I was there! Thank you for the grammy! (My 10th one! Whhaaa?) Have a wonderful night. I'm in bed, now feeling very restless x." Also not able to attend, Paul Epworth tweeted, "We won!! Thanks to @TheGRAMMYs and all who voted for us! X :-)."

Film composer, Thomas Newman (pictured), has won other Grammy Awards for his film scores. Newman is first cousin to Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter/film composer Randy Newman, and youngest son of Grammy Award winning film composer Alfred Newman. The Newman family legacy includes 13 Grammy Awards over the past 43 years.

The highly influential composer, John Barry, was nominated once for his work at the Grammys on the 11 James Bond films he scored; but not even the beloved original theme earned a Grammy. Barry won Grammys for his work on 'Dances with Wolves,' 'The Cotton Club,' 'Midnight Cowboy,' and 'Out of Africa.' In 1965 Barry lost for Best Original Score for ‘Goldfinger’ to ‘Mary Poppins’.

At the 10th Grammy Awards (1968), Burt Bacharach’s score for ‘Casino Royal’ lost to Lalo Schifrin’s ‘Mission Impossible.’ At least it was another spy film. And at the 20th Grammy Awards (1978), John Williams score for Star Wars trounced both Bill Conti’s score for ‘Rocky’ and Marvin Hamlisch’s score for ‘The Spy Who Loved Me

‘From Russia With Love’ won Golden Globe for Best Original Song in 1963, a category the Grammy Awards did not create until 1988. As a result, there could be no Grammys for any of the Shirley Bassey classic Bond songs, such as 'Goldfinger' or 'Diamonds Are Forever.' At the 50th Grammy Awards (2008) ‘Casino Royale’ song ‘You Know My Name’ lost to ‘Dreamgirls’ ‘Love You I Do.’

'Skyfall' won additional honors at the 2012 Golden Globes for Best Original Song. At the Oscars, Bond films were nominated 5 times in the past, but lost every time. Last year, at the Oscars, Bond won a record 2 statues out of the 5 it was nominated for. Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth, the unstoppable songwriting team scored for Best Original Song. It won another Oscar for Best Sound Editing (Per Hallberg and Karen Baker Landers).

Ultimately, when it comes to Bond films, the statues are late in coming to a franchise with songs and scores that many remember above the prior award winners. But in 'Skyfall' the awards and Bond fans are finally in sync.
