Last night the Grammy Awards posted a teaser on their official Twitter site, promising that today they would announce that one of the world's biggest rock bands would be performing at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Fans began the debate about which legendary act it would be. The Who? AC/DC? The Rolling Stones?
Turns out it's Bon Jovi.
Oh.
Calling Bon Jovi "one of the world's biggest rock bands" is a bit of a stretch these days. We're talking about a band that hasn't had a top 20 single since 1995. Bon Jovi's lengthy career is impressive, but it's hard to imagine more than a few Bon Jovi diehards getting excited for this performance.
The Grammy Awards are admitting as much by announcing that Bon Jovi won't be performing their current nominated song, "We Weren't Born to Follow," but will instead perform one of their greatest hits, to be selected by fans. Viewers can browse to www.cbs.com/grammys to vote for which song they want Bon Jovi to perform.
Listing the six possible options would be pointless, because we all know that "Livin' on a Prayer" is going to win. The poll is a sham because the outcome is pretty much a given.
Nothing against Bon Jovi, but consider some of the other nominated bands who made truly great music in 2009 and will not get to perform at the Grammys: MGMT, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Phoenix, Neko Case, Bruce Springsteen, and Brad Paisley. It's irksome that this novelty performance of a 24-year-old Bon Jovi song is stealing a performance slot from those other more deserving artists.
The 2010 Grammy Awards air on CBS on January 31.

The title rocks --and I concur.
I like Bon Jovi. (stumbled as well)
Yes I'm a mother and I will be watching. While they have not had a top 20 hit since 1995 they are still going and they are still with the times at least they are staying true to themselves and not selling out. I have every one of there cd's and will continue to listen until the day I can no longer do so. Also they are the only cd's I own. All the rest of them in my home belong to someone else.
Bon Jovi was a good choice
Let's see you look as good and sound that good when you are 47. I have loved Bon Jovi for 25 years and would prefer them over the other bands you mentioned.
The Grammy's have finally picked a Rock & Roll Band with class to play at the Grammy's. I have all of their CD'S as well, and I listen to them all the time. BONJOVI ROCKS! I for one will be watching tonights performacnce and rooting them mon!
