Bahrain's interior ministry has reported that a minibus packed with explosives has detonated near the British Embassy in the capital city of Manama. There are no reports of serious damage to the compound or of any casualties. Security forces have taken control of the area and an investigation is currently underway.
This news is especially disconcerting to the United Kingdom, as the British Embassy in Tehran, Iran was ransacked last Tuesday by a group of demonstrators who purportedly were angry with the recent sanctions the European Union levied upon the Islamic regime.
Bahrain's Saudi-backed, Sunni government has been reeling from political unrest brought about by the Arab Spring. Bahrain, a wealthy, Shiite-majority country with a Sunni monarchy, is considered a strategic ally of the United States and has strained diplomatic relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Although it is uncertain who carried out these attacks, the Iranian government is suspected by some of endorsing the attacks on the British Embassy in Tehran.
