Yes, the comedy "Chennai Express" (India, 2013) is now playing at the Valley Cinema Pub. It is a road trip story of sorts, by train, where 40-year-old Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan), who is taking his grandfather's ashes to the holy waters of Rameshwaram, meets Meena (Deepika Padukone), the daughter of a crime boss.
Meena is on the train to escape an arranged marriage with the brutish Tangaballi (Nikitin Dheer). Rahul is attracted to her but gets involved with a group of thugs who, it turns out, are there to kidnap Meena and take her back to her father. Of course he wants to help Meena to avoid this dreadful marriage, and from that small nugget of a plot, action and comedy ensue.
In traditional Bollywood style, this film is filled with vibrant color and lavish style, incredible dancing and explosive fight scenes, comedy and drama. Directed by Rohit Shetty, this film has opened worldwide, including in close to 200 theaters in the U.S. While the film may not be loved by the critics who favor serious dramas and art house films, its audiences are huge and "Chennai Express" has broken box office records in India.
If you're looking for a smile, with action and laughs and a heartwarming love story, "Chennai Express" is your film. Yes, it may be over-the-top, but it is a joy to be entertained from time to time by less than realistic stories that include song, dance, and incredible visuals.
It is a lengthy film (2 hours 20 minutes) and screens nightly at 6.10 pm at the Valley Cinema Pub in Beaverton, approximately 8 miles southwest of Portland. Tickets can be purchased (cash only) at the box office and are $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 to 7 for this screening.
