Bold lip colors rules the Academy Awards red carpet

Of all the trends making their way down the red carpet during Sunday past's Academy Awards red carpet, the most striking was the choice of bold lips on a clean canvas. Although it is a commonly discussed look, it is not often a popular choice to forgo a dark eye for a darker lip. However, the stark contrast of a clean face, lightly defined eyes and a natural brow with dark or brightly colored lips can create a winning look.

Celebrities like Naomi Watts and Emma Watson went incredibly bold with bright colors, while presenter Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Garner chose darker nude tones to accentuate their prominent pouts. Even Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o chose a bold gloss - a soft orange tone - to balance the waves of pale blue of her Prada gown.

Among some artists, this gorgeous makeup plan is a top choice for clients who need to be heard. With a pop of color, attention is drawn immediately to the lips, and people will tend to pay more attention to what that person is saying. It may be too attention-grabbing for some, but for others, it is a risk well taken. The women of the Academy Awards absolutely ruled the red carpet and knocked this makeup out of the park.
