The Baltimore Bohemians kicked off their first Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign with a clinical 4-1 victory over Icon FC Wednesday night at UMBC Stadium.
It took barely a quarter of an hour for the hosts to strike first. After Jerrod Laventure upended Mamadou Kansaye in the box, the Baltimore captain converted the penalty kick into the lower right corner past goalkeeper Chris Duggan for an early 1-0 lead.
The Bohs doubled their advantage seven minutes later, as Austin Martz stripped his defender of the ball, ran to the corner of the box, and fired a low drive into the far corner for a highlight-reel second goal.
Icon was reduced to ten men minutes before the interval, when Laventure was sent off for a hard studs-up tackle.
The visitors did claw their way back five minutes after the restart, as Adam Bujek delivered a beautiful cross to the far post, where Teddy Niziolek was waiting to head the ball past Baltimore netminder Andrew Harris from three yards out.
Baltimore restored their two-goal cushion with a strike from newcomer Brandon Allen in the 62nd minute.
Six minutes before the end, another Bohs veteran, Brian Graham, shimmied past a defender, leaving space between just himself and Duggan. Graham deftly tucked home the ball into the gaping net for the hosts' fourth of the evening.
Harrisburg's USL Pro team, the City Islanders, will travel to Baltimore to face the Bohs in a Third Round Open Cup match on May 28th.
