Boeing 777 landing aborted at Birmingham Airport; fliers sickened

An Emirates Boeing 777 landing, aborted by the pilot of the aircraft on Thursday, is making its rounds on the Internet. At the Birmingham Airport, the large commercial airliner, carrying 300 passengers, experienced high crosswinds from a UK storm and appeared sideways in a viral video. And after the third failed attempt, the pilot scrapped the landing and the Boeing jet was rerouted to another airport.

The Boeing 777 jet landing was aborted after the aircraft was blown sideways, according to a Dec. 6 ABC News report.

The harrowing video (shown here) of the jet landing was seen by viewers on the World Wide Web; the scary footage was seen by the passengers as the pilot struggled to set the airplane down on the tarmac.

At the time the Boeing 777 landing was aborted, a fierce storm was raging through the UK and with it came heavy rain, flooding, and crosswinds. Reportedly, at least three people were killed in the storm from high water.

Basically, the pilot was attempting a "crabbing" maneuver, a common landing technique that is used to counteract high crosswinds. It involves the operator of the aircraft steering the plane off center of the landing strip and bearing down on the rudder at the last possible second before touching down to bring the craft in line.

However, after three failed attempts, the pilot of the Boeing 777 aborted the landing and flew 100 miles to London's Gatwick Airport.

There, passengers were relieved to be on solid ground. Moreover, there were reports of vomiting and extreme nausea aboard the airplane during the landing attempts.

And at least one passenger made this promise via Twitter: "Never flying again."

With the Boeing 777 landing aborted, the better news is -- other than a few cases of motion sickness -- there were no other reported injuries.
