Bodybuilding: Enjoying holiday meals with no regrets

See also

When it comes to the holidays, it's not unusual for bodybuilders or fitness enthusiasts to dread the approaching celebration. This is usually the time when family and friends get together, each bringing their own version of holiday cheer. However, someone who avidly trains to stay in shape year round, can also look forward to the celebrations without experiencing impending dread. With a little bit of planning, focus and self control, holiday eating can be just as much fun for you as it is for everyone else.

Whether you are a bodybuilder or the average person, one of the biggest concerns of overeating is due to the variety of food choices. Studies have shown that the more food choices you have, the more calories you potentially consume. But, if you want to indulge and stay on track at the same time, the best way to approach your holiday is by dividing your plate into three sections; proteins, veggies and fun foods. Your protein sources should consume half of your plate; your veggies, the other half, with a quarter of that section devoted to fun foods. If you decide that you want a second helping, recreate the same process with your plate.

Don't allow yourself to sabotage your decision to indulge in the festivities. One day out of the year will not destroy the progress you've made thus far. In fact, allowing yourself to engage, rather than avoid, is more likely to keep you on track rather than your fear of getting off track. Why? Because, when you allow yourself, on occasion, the pleasure of a food or treat, not normally in your diet, you can actually enjoy it and move on, rather than force yourself to stay away from it. Sometimes, forcing it away causes you to lose control and possibly start binging.

It's just food. If you want it, it's not the end of the world. Just remember, you are in control. The holiday season is not your enemy. You can partake in the fun along with everyone else, and feel good about it while maintaining your healthy schedule. And that, my dear, is a celebration in itself!
