Update 4/16/14 - the deceased K-9 has been identified as "Mick." His handler, Officer Jeff Dorn, wants everyone to know that Mick saved his life.

According to KGW News, searchers in Portland, Ore., have found the body of a missing police canine who disappeared early Wednesday morning in the midst of gunfire between officers and a suspect.

An extensive search in the area near Southwest 30th Avenue and Barbur Boulevard was being conducted after the German shepherd disappeared. The dog's body was found under a hedge in the area where he disappeared - he had died from gunshot wounds.

The dog's handler, an officer who has not been identified, was also injured in the early-morning exchange. The officer was hospitalized with non life-threatening injuries.

The suspect in the shooting was apprehended around 6 a.m.

The dog who was killed was said to be wearing a canine police vest.
